Galaxy morphology,Universe timeline. Montage of galaxy images illustrating how the morphology of galaxies has remained constant as far back as 11 billion years ago. Galaxies are classified by what is known as the Hubble Sequence, the main types being spiral, elliptical and lenticular. The Hubble Sequence is tuning-fork-shaped,starting with elliptical galaxies and diverging along two branches of spiral galaxies. This is shown here for galaxies today (left),4 billion years ago (centre),and 11 billion years ago (right). These results are from CANDELS (Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey). For related images, see C023/3010 to C023/3013 | |
