Lunar Lander spacecraft landing on the Moon, illustration. Earth is at upper right. This robotic mission was under development by the European Space Agency (ESA). The primary objective of this mission was to achieve an autonomous landing, paving the way for future ESA human and robotic exploration missions. The Lunar Lander is 3.44 metres in height and 5.6 metres across. Power is provided by solar panels. It would land in the Moon's south polar region, using a Hazard Detection and Avoidance system, and carry out surface operations for several months. It was scheduled for launch in 2018,but was put on hold at the 2012 ESA Ministerial Council | |
