Maurice Ralph Hilleman (1919-2005),US microbiologist. Hilleman was awarded a doctorate in microbiology from the University of Chicago in 1941. Hilleman developed over 36 vaccines,including those for measles,mumps,hepatitis A,hepatitis B,chickenpox,meningitis,viral encephalitis,pneumonia and influenza. Hilleman worked at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 1948 to 1958. He then joined Merck and Co to lead its new virus and cell biology research department in West Point,Pennsylvania.
