Electrolysis of water. A simple apparatus to demonstrate the principle of electrolysis in water. The graphite in the 'lead' of the pencils is used to form the electrodes, connected to a 9-volt battery. The pencils are then dipped into a beaker of water which also contains a small amount of an electrolyte (e.g. dilute sulphuric acid). Bubbles of hydrogen are generated at the cathode, and oxygen at the anode. The rate of production of hydrogen is twice that of oxygen, leading to the empirical formula of water H2O | |
