Sulphur being heated in a test tube. Sulphur is a yellow solid at room temperature mostly made of octaatomic ring-shaped molecules. When heated above 95.2C it transforms from this alpha state to its beta state as the interaction between molecules changes. It melts at 115.2C and with increasing heat gamma sulphur is formed that shows increased viscosity due to polymerisation. At higher temperatures still the liquid sulphur depolymerises and becomes more fluid,at 200C starting to take on a deep reddish black colour | |
