Radium birthmark treatment. Illustration of the therapeutic use of the radioactive element radium,with a nurse administering radium in a tube to the face of a young girl to remove a birthmark. This treatment is being carried out at the London Hospital,Whitechapel,London,UK. This treatment was promoted by British surgeon Sir Frederick Treves (1853-1923) in conjunction with the newly founded British Radium Institute. Radium had been discovered by the Curies in 1898. Radium therapy started as early as 1903,and was widespread from 1913 to 1935. Artwork by Samuel Begg (1854-1936),published in the 6 February 1909 issue of 'The Illustrated London News'
