The type of cell they mature into depends upon the biochemical signals received by the immature cells. These embryonic stem cells (ES) are derived from the inner cell mass of the pre-implantation blastocyst or embryo (around five to seven days post-fertilization in humans) that is pluripotent and capable of self-renewal in cell culture.
