Green and black poison dart frog (Dendrobates auratus). This frog is found in Central America and north-western parts of South America. Its colouration indicates its skin toxicity, deterring predators. Various native South American peoples use the skin poison of dendrobatid frogs for the tips of their arrows. The poison contains a neurotoxin which can paralyse a bird or a small mammal almost immediately. The toxicity of this frog is due to alkaloids in its diet of ants. In captivity, this frog is harmless as it does not eat the necessary ants. This is a captive-bred frog | |
