Hydrogen fuel pumping station. Operator inspecting equipment at an experimental hydrogen fuel pumping station. The hydrogen is stored in cylinders (left) at a pressure of 200 bars. It is then compressed further for pumping into vehicle fuel cells at pressures of 350 and 700 bars. In the fuel cell, hydrogen (from the fuel tank) and oxygen (from the air) react to form water and electrical power. The only by-products are heat and water, making this technology a clean source of power compared to the pollutant gases and carbon dioxide produced by the burning of fossil fuels.
