Waste incinerator. Early 20th-century artwork of an early form of incinerator for cremating (burning) urban waste. Four of these units were in use in Berlin,Germany. The inset at left is a diagram of the internal structure, showing waste being tipped in at top,air entering from right, and ashes raked out at the bottom. The first garbage incineration plant in Germany was erected in Hamburg in 1896. Such incinerators were not widespread. The Berlin company failed in 1912,and there were only seven waste incinerators in Germany by 1914.
