Alcoholism research,19th-century artwork. French physician Jean Baptiste Vincent Laborde (left,1831-1903) injecting a guinea pig with alcohol during research into alcoholism. At the time,varying levels of purity in the alcohol found in alcoholic drinks could cause severe alcohol poisoning. Laborde also experimented with the effects of absinthe on guinea pigs.
