Nuclear power station at night. Night-time view of the cooling towers of the Dampierre Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). Cooling towers are used to dispose of waste heat from industrial processes. The waste energy is absorbed by water, which is sprayed into the cooling tower where it evaporates. Some of the water condenses and is reused, and some is lost as water vapour into the atmosphere. Located on the River Loire in Dampierre-en-Burly,France,this power station opened in 1980 and is operated by the EDF energy company. It has four pressurized water reactors (PWR),each capable of generating 890 megawatts of power. Photographed in January 2012 | |
