Aztec Migration. 19th-century reproduction of a 17th-century hieroglyphic chronology of the Aztec Migration from Aztlan (upper right) to central Mexico (lower left). This migration took place between 1064 and 1325,with legends saying that seven Nahuatl-speaking tribes migrated. The last tribe to arrive, the Mexica, founded Tenochtitlan (lower left) and later the Aztec Empire. The chronology names events and places along the migration route. The provenance at upper left states that the original painting belonged to an Aztec named Ixtlilxochitl. This copy was made by Italian explorer Gemelli Careri (1651-1725) and published in his 'Giro Del Mondo' (1699) | |
