Radiotherapy calibration. Scientist setting up equipment used to calibrate radiotherapy machines across the UK. This is a linear accelerator (linac). It is able to emit different types and strengths of radiation. Here,a light-ion beam will be focused on a calorimeter (round, foreground) and the amount of emitted radiation absorbed will be measured. This is equivalent to the dose absorbed by a patient. Data from these tests are used to calibrate the instruments that hospitals use to measure doses prior to treatment.
