Mene rhombea was a perciform (perch like) fish belonging to the family Menidae. This fish lived in Middle Eocene times, about 45 million years ago,in tropical lagoons in the Tethys Ocean,a large sea in the area that is now more or less the Mediterranean. Fossils of Mene rhombea, sometimes dubiously referred to as a "moonfish",are nearly all from Monte Bolca, about 30 km north-east of Verona in Italy. This location is known as Pesciara or "Fishbowl" due to the many marine fossils here found. The length of this adult specimen is about 20cm | |
