E. coli STEC bacterial testing. Researcher and chemist performing an assay on a sample from an agar medium (in petri dish) presumed to contain Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) bacteria. The toxin produced by these E. coli strains is known as shiga-like toxin (verotoxin). It acts on the lining of blood vessels,causing bloody diarrhoea and potentially fatal kidney failure.
