Geomagnetic polarity time scale. This scale was devised by pairing the Geologic time scale with records of reversals in the polarity of Earth's magnetic field since the early Paleocene period. The Geologic time scale is used to divide periods of Earth's history based on important geological events. A polarity reversal is when Earth's North pole is transformed into a South pole, and vice versa. It is currently thought that reversals occur spontaneously every few million years, but have no effect on life on Earth. Right to left on the chart is the era, number of years passed (in millions of years),major time periods, and the polarity of Earth's magnetic field | |
