Family with children with albinism. Mother and father with their six children,three of whom (in the bottom picture) are affected by albinism. Albinism is a genetic disorder characterized by a lack of the pigment melanin,which gives colour to the skin,hair and eyes. Those affected are known as albinos. This photograph,dating from circa 1938,is part of the research carried out into heredity and genetics by the Eugenics Record Office,Cold Spring Harbor,New York,USA. Eugenics is the controversial practice of selectively improving the genetics of human populations. Many eugenicists were criticised for their racist assumptions and plans for forced sterilizations
