American Eugenics Society (AES) members (from left): Florence Brown Sherbon (1869-1944),Mary T. Watts (died 1926),and Leon Fradley Whitney (1894-1973). Eugenics is the controversial practice of selectively improving the genetics of human populations. Sherbon (medical degree,1904) was Chair of the AES Popular Education Committee from 1929. She advocated improvements in childcare. With Watts,an early chair of the education committee,she founded the Fitter Families Contest in 1920 at the Kansas State Free Fair.
