William Henry Welch (1850-1934),US pathologist. Welch studied medicine at the Columbia medical school in New York,receiving his MD in 1875. From 1884 he worked at the new medical faculty at Johns Hopkins University,Baltimore,USA. In 1892,working with Nuttall,he discovered the bacteria that caused gas gangrene. By 1894 he was the first dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He also founded the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health (1916). He received the Distinguished Service Medal for his service in World War I,where he reached the rank of Brigadier General. Photographed circa 1910 | |
