Takayasu's arteritis. Light micrograph of a section through the aorta showing Takayasu's arteritis (TAK). This is a rare disease involving inflammation (purple cells) in the walls of the largest arteries in the body: the aorta and its main branches. The disease results from an attack by the body's own immune system. The inflammation leads to narrowing of the arteries, which can reduce blood flow to many parts of the body. Mainly affecting young or middle-aged women of Asian descent the disease responds well to steroid treatment. Magnification: x80 when printed at 10 centimetres wide | |
