Honey bee inoculation. Pipette being used to inoculate a honey bee (Apis mellifera) with the microsporidian parasite Nosema that causes the disease nosemosis. This research will help determine bee infection rates and immune responses to this parasite. Much research has been carried out to try and explain the honey bee syndrome known as 'colony collapse disorder' (CCD). CCD is the sudden disappearance of worker bees from a colony. The cause is poorly understood, but may be due to a combination of factors, such as mite infestation or various viruses. Nosemosis is thought to be one of the possible causes | |
