Salyut 7 space station in orbit. This Soviet space station was in orbit for nearly nine years from its launch on 19 April 1982,until it re-entered the earth's atmosphere and broke up on 7 February 1991. A total of seven crews (of three) visited the space station before late 1984,when a power failure led to the loss of life support functions during an unmanned period. It was manned again for a period in 1985 and 1986. Here,a Soyuz spacecraft (black, upper centre) is docked at one end. The space station itself was 16 metres long. It orbited at an altitude of between 220 and 280 kilometres. The Moon (lower right) is visible above the Earth's limb | |
