Clouds and mud on Mars as seen from space, artwork. This is a prehistoric Mars, billions of years ago when its atmosphere was thicker and warmer and there was thought to be flowing water and mud deposits on its surface, and polar ice caps. Currently,Mars is a rocky desert world with no surface water. The atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide and Martian surface temperatures are well below freezing. Most of the water and atmosphere were lost to space,or locked up underground in deposits of ice. This image can also represent a future Mars,in the process of being terraformed for human habitation | |
