Gaspard-Felix Tournachon (1820-1910),French balloonist and photographer known by the pseudonym Nadar. Here,he is shown standing in the basket of a balloon holding binoculars. The French text below,referring to the location of Marseilles,is signed and dated January 1897. Nadar's ballooning exploits included taking the first aerial photographs in the 1850s,and building a large balloon (Le Geant) in 1863. He set up his fourth photographic studio in Marseilles in 1895 when in his seventies. He returned to Paris in 1909 and died there the following year | |
