Kelly Johnson and Gary Powers. US pilot (Francis) Gary Powers (right,1929-1977) in 1966 with U-2 designer Kelly Johnson (left,1910-1990) and a Lockheed U-2 spy aircraft. Powers was a US Air Force fighter pilot recruited by the CIA in 1956 to fly civilian U-2 missions over the USSR. Powers was shot down by a Soviet surface-to-air missile outside Sverdlovsk,in the USSR,on 1 May 1960. He was captured,interrogated by the Soviet authorities and imprisoned for espionage.
