Lymphoid follicle. Light micrograph of a section through a lymphoid follicle in a human spleen, showing: i) a pale germinal centre - the source of new lymphocytes (white blood cells) destined to become B-cells and plasma cells; ii) a mantle (blue ring) of resting B-cells; iii) an outer ring (red) called the marginal zone, which separates the white pulp from the surrounding red pulp. Splenic lymphoid follicles react to antigens (microbes, toxins, other blood-borne pathogens),which arrive in the red pulp via the capillaries. They initiate the production of lymphocytes and antibodies directed specifically to neutralise and destroy the foreign antigens. Magnification: x180,when printed 10 centimetres high | |
