Queenless ants. Streblognathus peetersi ants fighting for dominance in their nest. S. peetersi originates from South Africa. They are a species of ant that does not have a queen in the colony. All the worker ants are morphologically similar and are able to reproduce sexually. However, out of 100 ants in the colony only one,the Alpha,is allowed to reproduce. The Alpha is chosen through a hierarchical system of dominance asserted through fighting. Here, the Alpha (centre) is asserting its dominance by spraying pheromones at its opponents and biting them on the head | |
