HD 131488 planetary collision. Artwork of two large rocky bodies colliding in the inner planetary system of the HD 131488 star. This star is some 500 light years from Earth,in the constellation of Centaurus. The collision has been inferred from observations of a ring of dust surrounding the star. The composition of this dust is not as expected, possibly because the collision may have occurred relatively recently. It is thought this collision took place in a mature system, involving an Earth-like planet supporting life. The collision would have destroyed all life. The results were published in 2010 | |
