Stem cell-derived retinal cells. Fluorescence light micrograph of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells that have been derived from human embryonic stem cells (HESC). ZO-1 tight junction protein is red,and cell nuclei are green. RPE is the pigmented cell layer just outside the retina in the eye that nourishes retinal visual cells. HESC are pluripotent - they are able to differentiate into any of the 200 cell types in the human body. The type of cell they mature into depends upon the biochemical signals received by the immature cells. This ability makes them a potential source of cells to repair damaged tissue in diseases such as Parkinson's and insulin-dependent diabetes | |
