Baga shoulder mask,West Africa. Traditional wooden shoulder mask from the Baga people of Guinea,in West Africa. Known as a D'mba (Nimba) headdress,it depicts a woman with the head at top and stylised breasts at lower left above the four legs. These four legs enable the mask to be carried on the wearer's shoulders, with the wooden carving being dressed in costume,as shown here. These objects can be over 100 years old,and are used in funerals, harvest festivals and other rituals | |
