Davy experimenting at Vesuvius. 19th-century artwork of British chemist Humphrey Davy (1778-1829) in 1819 carrying out experiments on the slopes of the volcano Mount Vesuvius,near Naples,Italy. Davy visited Vesuvius several times,in 1814 and again in 1819 and 1820. He carried out several experiments during his 1819 and 1820 visit. In 1828,the year before his death,he read his paper 'On the Phenomena of Volcanoes' to the Royal Society,describing some of these experiments.
