Frontispiece of Ogilby's 'Africa' (1670),with the title inscribed in English at top. This work, one of a series on continents, was produced by the London-based Scottish cartographer John Ogilby (1600-1676). It is a 767-page atlas describing the known lands and peoples of Africa, and includes 57 plate engravings of maps and artworks. Largely based on the 1668 work 'Naukeurige Beshryvinge der Afrikaenesche gewesten' by Dutch geographer Olfert Dapper, the engravings were by 17th-century Dutch artist Jacob van Meurs. This frontispiece shows assorted African peoples and animals surrounding an enthroned African ruler | |
