Pineapple leaf surface detail. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the underneath surface of a pineapple leaf (Ananas comosus). The leaves of the pineapple plant are used, especially in the Philippines, for making textiles. The fibre produced from these tough leaves (known as Pina) is often mixed with other materials such as silk and polyester to make fabrics. This pina fabric is used in making the Barong Tagalog (an embroidered formal garment) and other formal wear in the Philippines. The material is stiff but lightweight and sheer and is often made into table linens, bags, mats and items of clothing. It is also used for making paper. Magnification x713 (x175 at 10cm wide) | |
