Paddle steamers at a steamboat landing in Vicksburg,Mississippi,USA,with freight being loaded including bales of cotton and hay. At left is the 'Belle of Calhoun' and at right is the 'Belle of the Bends'. The latter was built in 1898 and operated on the route Greenville to Vicksburg (indicated on paddle housing),carrying over 100 passengers. The 'Belle of Calhoun' was built in 1895. She sunk several times,but was raised each time,eventually being destroyed in a fire in around 1930. Commercial paddle steamers operated from the start of the 19th century to the 1930s.
