USA-Canada boundary surveying. Members of the British North American Boundary Commission camped in a tent while surveying the boundary between the USA and Canada in 1861. Seated in the tent is Captain Charles John Darrah (died 1871,Royal Engineers),while at left is Captain Robert Wolseley Haig (1830-1872,Royal Artillery). They are at the Yahk River station. Next to Darrah in the tent is a surveying instrument called a theodolite. Both Haig (Chief Astronomer) and Darrah (Assistant Astronomer) served on the Commission between 1858 and 1862.
