Rear leg of young Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) in a laboratory. This carnivorous predator reaches lengths of over six metres when fully grown. It inhabits tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, near swamps, lakes and rivers. The young, born from eggs, are initially around 30 centimetres long. They grow to around 1.2 metres in length over the next two years, before becoming independent and leaving the nest area. A crocodile's legs have claws, and its back feet are webbed, but the front feet are not webbed. Photographed in 2011,at the Pierrelatte crocodile farm (La Ferme aux Crocodiles) in southern France | |
