Crocodile embryo research. Egg from a Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) illuminated to reveal a dark band. The appearance of this band is used to estimate the age of the embryo. The eggs of this crocodile, laid in batches of 25 to 80,hatch after an incubation period of three months. The embryo is sustained by the nutrients in the egg,and the hatchling is around 30 centimetres long when born. This research is being carried out at the Pierrelatte crocodile farm (La Ferme aux Crocodiles) in southern France. Founded in 1994,this tourist attraction and research centre houses some 400 crocodiles. Photographed in 2011 | |
