Nile crocodile, skin examination. The exposed patch (centre, red) is where a bony scale (osteoderm) has been removed for testing. Tests will also be carried out on the crocodile's blood. This carnivorous predator reaches lengths of over six metres when fully grown. It inhabits tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, near swamps, lakes and rivers. The young grow from 30 centimetres to 1.2 metres in length over two years, before leaving the nest area.
