Prehistoric fish brain. French palaeontologist Philippe Janvier,of the French National Museum of Natural History, holding a cast of the oldest fossil brain discovered at the time (2009). The graphics tablet shows digital images of the skull (green and blue) and brain (orange) of a fish from 300 million years ago. Casts of parts of the fossil have been made from scanning data (X-ray synchrotron microtomography) using a 3D printer. One is in Janvier's hands, two others are at lower left. The original fossil (bottom left) is of an iniopterygian,an extinct relative of ratfishes (ghost sharks). It was found in shales in Kansas and Oklahoma,USA | |
