Cro-Magnon 1 fossil skull. This specimen is a fossil of the skull of an elderly male. It dates from around 28,000 years ago,and was found in the Dordogne region in southern France in 1868. Cro-Magnons were an early European culture of modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens). A study carried out in 2010 found that this specimen's cranium (and hence brain) was around a fifth larger than human brains today. 3D scans were used to produce an endocast of the brain cavity. Photographed at the Musee de l'Homme (Museum of Man),Paris,France, one of the departments of the French National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) | |
