Basalt and olivine pebble. Rounded pebble of grey basalt with inclusions of peridotite rock (green),composed mainly of olivine crystals. This basalt is highly vesicular - full of small voids that are leftovers of gas bubbles trapped in the basaltic lava after it flowed out to the surface and cooled down. When ascending to the surface from the deep magma source, such magmas may also bring along bits and pieces of other rocks, such as the inclusions seen here. This specimen is from a riverbed in the Eifel mountains,Germany, and is roughly the size of a small apple | |
