Supercell thunderstorm. Time-exposure image of lightning (right) striking through the inflow band of a supercell thunderstorm (clouds at left). An abandoned farmstead is in the foreground. A supercell thunderstorm is a severe long-lived storm within which the wind speed and direction changes with height. This produces a strong rotating updraft of warm air (a mesocyclone) as well as a separate downdraft of cold air. This is a classic supercell structure. Supercell thunderstorms are capable of producing tornadoes. Photographed near Burlington,Colorado,USA,on 17 September 2011 | |
