Large hernia. 18th-century journal page illustrating a large hernia in an 80-year-old man. The hernia had developed in his youth and gradually increased in size until it forced his discharge from the army in 1725. For six or seven years before his death,it had engulfed his penis (centre right) so that urination could only occur through the oval slit at centre. The hernia was around 86 centimetres in circumference at its greatest extent.
