Koch and tuberculosis research. The German bacteriologist Robert Koch (1843-1910) is considered one of the founders of modern medical bacteriology. His techniques for cultivating bacteria, both in liquid and solid media, and his use of stains, enabled him to isolate the specific bacteria responsible for certain diseases. In 1882 he identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis (TB). Koch, here working on TB treatments, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1905.
