Supernova remnant, composite image. This glowing cloud of gas and dust surrounds the G54.1+0.3 pulsar (centre). When a large star dies, gas shells explode outwards and collide with interstellar material. The energy of the collision ionises the gas, causing it to glow. This image combines X-ray data (blue) from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and infrared data (red, green and yellow) from the Spitzer Space Telescope. The X-ray data shows a strong wind from the pulsar. This image is about 17 light years across. This supernova remnant is located some 20,000 light years from Earth,in the constellation of Sagitta. Image published in 2010 | |
