NGC 1399 elliptical galaxy, composite image. This image combines X-ray data (blue core) from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and optical data (yellow haze) from the Hubble Space Telescope. Several strong X-ray sources are seen outside the central core, including an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) at upper right (blue dot,two yellow dots below it). This is thought to be a white dwarf that has been torn apart by a black hole. This image is about 54,000 light years across. NGC 1399,the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster,is located around 65 million light years from Earth,in the constellation of Fornax. Image published in 2010 | |
