Neptune balloon accident. Historical artwork showing how the French balloonist Jules Durouf used an air anchor on 13 September 1878 to successfully survive an accident in his balloon, the 'Neptune'. A similar accident later resulted in the death of the English aeronaut Joseph Simmons in August 1888,but Durouf had used a longer anchor which resulted in a slower emergency descent. Durouf also took other precautions which helped him survive the descent, and his anchor caught at ground level rather than at tree-top height.
