North Pacific sea floor topography. Computer model of ocean floor depth (bathymetry) in the North Pacific Ocean, from Toyko (left) in Japan,to Honolulu (right) in Hawaii. The peaks are underwater mountains and volcanoes, some of which rise above the water to form islands. The tectonic plate boundary at left shows a steep transition from ocean floor to elevated continental shelf and land. This sharp transition increased the impact on Japan of the 2011 tsunami. This model, using the ETOPO-1 dataset, was produced by the Environmental Visualization Laboratory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).<br>Restrictions: | |
