Antarctica,RADARSAT image. Antarctica is a continent surrounding the South Pole and occupying much of the Earth's southern polar regions. It is encased in perpetual snow and ice,and is the coldest place on Earth. Ice shelves extend out from the shores of Antarctica, such as the massive Ross Ice Shelf (lower centre). Other features include the Antarctic Peninsula (upper left) and the peaks of the Transantarctic Mountains range (lower centre). This image was produced using data obtained in 1997 from the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensor on the Radarsat-1 satellite. The image was published in 2001 | |
